This digital painting is from a photo I shot of the famous surf shack at Windansea Beach, in La Jolla, California back in 1982. I learned to surf here before I became a surf photographer. Windansea will forever live in my heart, mind and soul. I had some of the best times of my life surfing there and I still have friends for life that I first met there back in 1974.
The Surfers Journal used this photo as cover art for one of the surfing videos they produced back in the 1980's. This photo with the single fin longboards kind of sums up the spirit of Windansea Beach. La Jolla was a big part of surfing’s growth on a global scale. Legends of big wave riding, surfboard design and evolution, surfed here in La Jolla. Woody Brown in 1935 was part of a group of local surfers known as the Plank Boys because of their huge surfboards made of solid redwood, fir and spruce planks.
Bob Simmons in the early 1950's started to combine fiberglass with balsa wood and foam paving the wave for a revolution in surfboard weight and design. Simmons unfortunately died in a surfing accident at Windansea in 1954 which led to the break just to the north of Windansea being named in his honor.
Many local surfers from this area migrated over to the N. Shore of Oahu in the 1950's to tackle Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and what's called the seven mile miracle on the N. Shore of Oahu.
I shot this on 35 mm Kodachrome film and then scanned it and did the photo painting manipulation in Photoshop with my pen tablet.
