Each winter when the surf on the N. Shore of Oahu starts pumping and the waves at Waimea get big enough to ride a hoard of surfers all rush to get out there. As the swell gets bigger the crowd gets smaller. Funny how that works. I shot this image in January of 2012.
When I first started coming to the N. Shore of Oahu in Jan of 1981 I had to use the newspaper to look at satellite images of the storms tracking across the N. pacific and use a weather radio to try and determine if and when a swell might hit the N. Shore. Today Surfline can pinpoint a swell and target it's size, direction and swell angle and exact time of arrival. The crowds today at Waimea have increased dramatically since I first came here. There 50 or so guys in this pack and that doesn't show all the others paddling out above them.
