This was shot on dec 19th 1995 during the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Big Wave Surfing contest held at Waimea Bay, on the North Shore of Oahu.
This is a picture perfect 20' + Hawaiian scale set wave (40'+) on the face. This is the size wave that is required to run this contest. It's too bad none of the surfers in this heat caught this wave. It has a score of 10 written all over it.
The water photographers and surfers in the foreground are paddling hard to get outside because there's something even bigger coming in on the horizon and they don't want to get caught inside.
I shot this on Kodachrome 64 slide film then scanned it and added deep color correction and 3D texture to bring it alive.
