This shot of Rusty Keaulana I shot during the Eddie Aikau invitational big wave contest at Waimea Bay, in 2004 shows a massive wall of water chasing him down. The Keaulana family are surfing royalty in Hawaii.
On my first trip to Oahu in January 1981 I met Buffalo Keaulana and a youg Brian Kealulan at Maka Beach on the west side of the island at Makaha Beach. I ended up shooting aphoto of Brian out surfing which Surfer Magazine published and ran my fiorst full page color photo in the magazine. To run the Eddie, the surf has to be 40' on the face of the wave or what the Hawaiians call 20'. They measure the wave size from the back of the wave and not peak to trough on the face.
