This photo of the Waimea shore break ran as a two page spread in The Surfers Journal magazine for a portfolio of my work they published. You'll notice the Kahuna's body and head with mouth open in the barrel of the wave. The image was digitally painted using 3D texture to bring it to life.
I have great respect for this place called Waimea Bay. Before I moved to Hawaii full time in 2004 upon my arrival on the north shore I would drive to the Heiau above Waimea Bay that overlooks the bay and I would present an offering to 'Kanaloa - the Hawaiian god of ocean' and the land of departed spirits. I would pay my respects and ask for blessings and protection while surfing and while shooting water shots in the powerful and dangerous Hawaiian surf on the N. Shore. I think the Kahuna that appeared in this wave was a gift and a message from the Hawaiian spirts that they have my back!
